Hyperglycemia During Total Parenteral Nutrition

OBJECTIVE To determine the effect of total parenteral nutrition (TPN)-induced hyperglycemia on hospital outcome. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The study determined whether blood glucose values before, within 24 h, and during days 2-10 of TPN are predictive of hospital complications and mortality. RESULTS Subjects included a total of 276 patients receiving TPN for a mean duration of 15 +/- 24 ...

Iodine deficiency associated with parenteral nutrition in extreme preterm infants.

Infants are in negative iodine balance on current standard regimens of total parenteral nutrition, with a mean iodine intake of 3 micro g/kg/day (150 ml/kg/day). The recommended enteral intake of iodine for preterm infants is 30 micro g/kg/day. Gastrointestinal absorption of iodine is high, suggesting that parenteral intakes should approach enteral recommendations.

Successful Combined Treatment with Total Parenteral Nutrition Fluid Extravasation Injuries in Preterm Infants

Extravasation injuries in the neonatal intensive care unit are not rare during parenteral hyperalimentation. There have been many different methods of management. We report five premature infants with wounds of hyperalimentation fluid extravasation managed by the antibacterial ointment (Terramycin ophthalmic ointment and sesame oil and a antiinflammatory herbal mixture (MEBO).)
